The loop in loop chain is one of the oldest types of chains. It's at least 5000 years old, but probably even more.
"Among the earliest surviving examples of loop in loop chains were those discovered in the royal graves at Ur [Mesopotamia] which have been dated to around 3000 B.C., but mastery of the problems associated with the technique and the quality of the craftsmanship indicates that simple chains of this type had probably been produced for some time before this." Stark, J. R., & Smith, J. R. (1997). Classical loop-in-loop chains and their derivatives. Brynmorgen Press.
Used by the Egyptians, Greeks, Romans/Byzantines, this chain is made from links fused (not soldered) on themselves and interwoven into each other. It can be made with simple links like this one, double, or multiple links for a more dense look.
Usually made from fine silver or high karat gold (22k or 23k), I wanted to try making it in pure, 24k gold. This created different challenges due to pure gold's malleability. Drawing the wire was more complicated that with alloyed gold, but the biggest challenge was making a clasp that would be work hardened enough so that it wouldn't bend easily. Meaning I couldn't just solder/fuse it onto the chain, I had to twist and bend a thick wire, that I had tapered by forging it, to make a hook that would click in a loop.
The links of the chain are also work hardened through the shaping and weaving process. It's still 24k, so a big hit would deform them, but they won't bend just by wearing the bracelet like if they were annealed.
Total weight of the bracelet is 16.63g and 7¾" long. The price is 1 oz of gold, but I posted it with a slightly higher dollar price.
Message me if you're interested, for more details or if you want to custom order a different variation of the chain.
